METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Distance Learning Higher Education

 

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. Students enrolling into this distance education program should be aware that:
1. Location: Bircham International University needs a functional geographical location to ship the book and materials for successful completion of this program of study.
2. Communication: Email, courier, phone are key communication instruments with Bircham University that play an important role in the progress and support of this program of study.
3. Capacity: Any impediment, physical or psychological, to read a book and write a report must be communicated to Bircham International University prior to enrollment into this distance learning program.

Duration - Forestry Online via distance learning

For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week. It also depends on the number of validated credits from previous knowledge and the level of commitment to the studies.

Ecosystems
This course surveys the structure and functioning of major terrestrial ecosystems. It considers the dynamics of ecosystems, landscape ecology, the methods of ecosystem analysis, energy flow, nutrient cycling, community dynamics, issues of scale, models, and ecosystem properties of self-organization, resilience, and stability.

Soil & Water Conservation
This course reviews the problems, principles, and control of soil erosion by water and wind, land planning for soil conservation, and water management including irrigation and drainage problems.

Wood Science
This course studies wood structure and relates it to the properties of major wood products and the technology used. It introduces wood as an industrial raw material, pulping and bleaching, tree growth, and wood formation. It discusses contemporary forest products, including the production of lumber alternatives from veneers and particles.

Wood Products
This course reviews major forest and wood products and industries, their economic importance, the raw material used, harvesting and manufacturing processes, and industrial trends. It also explores laminated wood, particle boards, and paper making.

Drainage & Irrigation
This course explores all issues related to drainage and irrigation including soil-water-plant relationships, theory of infiltration and evapotranspiration, saturated and unsaturated flow through soils, movement of chemicals in the vadose zone, the design of surface and subsurface drainage systems, design of sprinkler, trickle, and subsurface irrigation systems. It studies the management of irrigation systems in developing countries.

This course reviews the development, anatomy, morphology, function, and ecology of trees.

Ecology & Human Impact
This course studies the relationships of live organisms, including humans, to their environment at the individual, population, and community level. It includes adaptations to the physical environment, competition, concept of the niche, population dynamics, predator-prey interactions, herbivore effects, community ecology, ecosystem structure and stability, and the use and management of resources by the human beings.

International Environmental Law
This course examines the rapidly expanding body of international instruments and law that bears on problems affecting the environment. Specific topics include transboundary pollution, acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, marine pollution, international movements of hazardous wastes, species protection, population, genetically altered foods, outer space, and the Kyoto Protocols. It looks at the international regimes on the ownership, control, and management of natural resources, including the international institutions designed to resolve disputes.

Plant Pathology
This course studies plant diseases, including plant pathogens, etiology of disease, and various control strategies. It also reviews the concepts of integrated management of plant diseases: regulatory, cultural, chemical, host plant resistance, and biological controls.

Plant Health Management
This course studies the identification and biology of important diseases and plant insects. It presents an integrated approach to pest and plant health management in various plant environments.

Forest Ecosystem Management
This course presents an integrated approach to forest resources management with an evaluation to current ecosystem management models. It examines planning, regulating, and decision-making associated with public and private forests with resource and policy constraints. It considers the ecological management of processes, services, and goods produced by the forest such as wildlife, water, range, recreation, wilderness, biodiversity, as well as wood products.

Wildlife Ecology Management
This course deals with the issues, ethics, challenges, and opportunities associated with management of wildlife, the physical and biological interactions in wildlife, and how it is affected by man's activities. It explores the relationships between wildlife populations, human communities, and the characteristics of the landscape they occupy.

You may download this application form from our website or request it by email or mail. Please send this application and enclosed documents to the corresponding BIU Office and allow ten business days for processing. You may also submit this application and attached documents by email in PDF Format.

* Submit one ID-sized photo; and
* Date and sign the application.

ALL Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate applicants also must:
* Attach biodata in the form of a Curriculum Vitae (Resume);
* Submit Registration Fee of 200 €uros or 250 US$ (contact BIU Office for payment details);
* Include copies of diplomas, transcripts, relevant documents; and
* Include any additional program proposal, scholarship request, etc. (optional).

 

Bircham International University issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the distance learning degree program's major. Bircham University can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.
