Surveying
This course examines the principles and techniques of surveying; errors in surveying operations; distance measurements; chain surveying; angles measurements and bearings; coordinates geometry; leveling; leveling of profiles and cross-sections contour lines; areas and volumes computations; and photometry.

Earth Science
This course examines the structure of Earth including plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. It reviews the natural processes operating on Earth such as erosion, mass wasting, glaciation permafrost, rivers, etc. It also covers Earth history; stratigraphic and paleontologic concepts; and minerals and non-renewable earth resources and their exploitation. It explores natural hazards and global change and the primary considerations for survival in addition to water, food, and energy supplies, soil loss, and waste disposal.

Human Habitat
This course studies the concepts, methods, techniques, and applications for the analysis of the human habitat, settlements, distribution, population, and cultural environment. It explores the relation of human habitats with available land space, geography, overpopulation, and ecological impact.

World Geography
This course studies the Earth's total physical environment: atmosphere, water, landforms, soils, and vegetation. It reviews the complete world regional geography and cartography and emphasizes on the interrelationship between human beings and the environment within the global patterns of physical geography.

Atmospheric Science
This course presents weather processes and climate and discusses fronts and cyclones, precipitation processes, the wind systems of the world, severe storms, and weather modification. It reviews the physical and chemical behavior of the atmosphere and the fundamental concepts used in weather analysis and forecasting.

Geomorphology
This course centers on the dynamic processes that sculpt the Earth’s surface. These processes include weathering, erosion, sediment deposition by water, wind, ice, and mass-wasting. It considers the physical processes, environmental impact and remediation, and engineering capabilities of soils, fluvial processes, glacial deposits, landslides, and coastal processes.

Oceanography
Oceans cover seventy percent of the Earth’s surface, regulating our climate and maintaining our atmosphere. They also contain virtually all the known chemical elements. This course deals with the aspects of geology, chemistry, physics, climatology, environmental science, and biology as applied to oceans. It covers topics like underwater volcanoes, the greenhouse effect, the El Niño phenomenon and its link to droughts and floods, and the global view of ocean properties.

Cartography
This course provides a solid conceptual foundation in the principles of cartography. It introduces the newest technological advances that have greatly altered modern cartographic techniques. It includes a complete updating of topical data and a shift in emphasis from "small-scale to all-scale maps.'' It also integrates GIS technologies with disciplines such as remote sensing, cartography, geography, and computer science.

This course explores the basis of remote sensing systems, the concepts of information extraction, and applications pertinent to earth and atmospheric systems. It reviews the instrumentation, measurement, and signal processing techniques required for remote sensing applications.

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week.
