MODULE: Manual Therapy & Massage

Program delivered by distance learning higher education up to a maximum of 27 credits. This module may be combined or completed with other online university courses from this faculty.

DESCRIPTION:

This program in manual therapy provides information on the art and science of effective healing massage techniques. The program contains a thorough description of both Eastern and Western massage skills and explains the effects of massage from a physiological as well as an holistic perspective. It includes case studies that connect related pathologies to various topics in anatomy, physiology and the bioenergetic structure of our body. It also addresses topics in physical therapy and exercise for maintaining optimum health.

This module is applicable to Specialist, Expert, Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. (Doctor) Programs. This distance learning degree program is designed at the postgraduate level – Master’s or Doctoral. This module may be easily adapted to complete the Specialist, Expert or Bachelor’s adult degree program requirements. A further option is the enrollment into the online university courses listed in this module.

* University Course (3 credits): Select 1 subject from this module.

* Specialist Diploma (15 credits): First 5 subjects or select 5 subjects from this module.

* Expert Diploma (21 credits): First 7 subjects or select 7 subjects from this module.

* Bachelor's Degree (130 credits): The Admission certificate issued after submission of the application for admission will show the amount of credit transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete this undergraduate program's major. Additional courses from other modules of this faculty will be assigned in case that the credits displayed on this module are not enough to complete the bachelor's required credits.

* Master's Degree (35 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 13 credits corresponding to a final project to the selected subjects.

* Ph.D. (Doctor) (45 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 18 credits corresponding to a final thesis to the selected subjects.

BIU issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the degree program's major. BIU can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.

Touch & Palpation

This course identifies the muscle and bone of the musculo-skeletal system, and integrates the knowledge of anatomy with the theoretical skills of palpation with emphasis on the muscular system. It explains the palpation of bony landmarks and superficial muscles.

Aromatherapy Massage

This course combines the properties of essential oils with a variety of forms of massage to restore and enhance health, beauty and overall well-being. It integrates two of the oldest forms of therapy, aroma and massage, to calm, relieve, nurture and to balance the patient´s body-mind-soul.

Biomechanics

This course provides an analysis of body motion, motor learning and performance. The principles of biomechanics are applied to: muscle mechanics, the evaluation of body motion efficiency, postural and soft tissue dynamics and prescription exercise.

Manual Therapies / Massage

This course presents the theoretical basis for the use of massage and touch therapies to promote healing through the study of the physiology of the body and the bioenergetic fields. It shows the principles of several touch therapies considering the points of view of Western and Oriental techniques.

Massage Techniques

This course examines massage practice as a therapeutic remedy for various ailments. Specific applications are given for the relief and treatment of several pathologies, deformities, disorders, and pains. It reviews different massage principles and techniques from Western and Oriental cultures, and explains how massage enhances the healing and recovery effects of other therapies.

Physical Therapy

This course provides a comprehensive knowledge of physical therapy for treatment of injuries, bodily weaknesses and defects through physical remedies such as massage, exercise, gymnastics, light, heat, cold, water and mechanical devices. It presents the physiological benefits of exercise in the correction of structural imbalances and the value of stretching, deep breathing, yoga, aerobic and non-aerobic activities for maintaining optimum health.

Meridians Anatomy

This course presents the theory of Meridians, the internal and external courses of the Twelve Meridians, Eight Extra Meridians, the Collateral, and the Muscle/Tendon Meridians. It offers a study of the acupoints of the major Meridians with topographical and deep anatomy as it relates to their locations. It includes the micro-system of ear acupuncture points.

Acupoints & Acupressure

This course presents the major principles of acupoint selection and therapy for various diseases. Acupressure stimulates the acupuncture point locations on meridian pathways to facilitate healing through the movement of Qi energy. This is the theory of Tui-Na (manipulative therapy) in the treatment of various disorders.

Sport Injuries

This course deals with the prevention and treatment of sport injuries. It covers protective equipment, first aid, micro traumas, injuries specific to certain sports that affect to some body parts, athletes with disabilities, nutrition, and medications. It provides suggestions to achieve a safe but optimal skill performance, either for the average performer or the elite athlete.
