It describes the relationships between the structural elements of these materials and their characteristics. It also discusses the corrosive, electrical, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties of these materials in addition to relevant economic, environmental, and societal issues.

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. Students enrolling into this distance education program should be aware that:
1. Location: Bircham International University needs a functional geographical location to ship the book and materials for successful completion of this program of study.

Duration - Materials Science Engineering Online via distance learning

For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week. It also depends on the number of validated credits from previous knowledge and the level of commitment to the studies.

Materials Science
This course explains how materials are manufactured; why they behave the way they do; how they are fabricated into structural objects-parts; and how they can be compounded into alloys, reinforced composite structures, and flexibilized toughened structures. It considers the properties of materials utilized in practice of engineering, and the atomic, molecular, and crystalline structure of metals, ceramics, composites, and polymeric materials.

Materials Behavior
This course examines the relationships between processing, properties, structure, and the behavior of materials. It considers the behavior of ceramics, metals, polymers, composites, compound semiconductors, magnetic systems, and biological hard tissues.

Properties of Materials
This course explains thermal properties, electrical conduction, magnetic properties, shape memory, and the optical properties of many materials. It explores the relations between physical properties and chemical composition, crystal structure, and the microstructure of each material.

This course deals with the applications of metal and alloy processing techniques. It focuses on the relationships between processing, microstructure, and properties as well as corrosion, the finishing, and the processing of metals. This course explores the engineering and science aspects of ceramic processing, powder processing and characterization, formation, micro-structural development, and properties.

This course presents the physical properties of wood: wood moisture relationship, thermal and electrical properties of wood, and its cellular structure. It also reviews the mechanical behavior of wood, its strength, its properties, and its deterioration.

Construction Materials & Assemblies
This course examines the principles, techniques, equipment, and materials used in the construction industry. It focuses on selecting the proper materials and equipment for specific construction tasks and estimating costs. It evaluates the properties of building materials such as: concrete, brick, wood, steel, plastics, synthetic fibers, adhesives, sealants, and composites.

Polymer Science
This course examines polymer chemistry, polymerization kinetics, polymer rheology, and material characteristics. It considers design and analysis of polymer reactors, extruders, molding machines, and other forming operations. It also discusses modern industrial and commercial processes for production and fabrication of polymer materials.

Electronic Properties of Materials
This course presents the physical electronic properties of different materials. It studies the electron theory and conduction, electronic properties of metals, semiconductors, conduction and valence bands, the electrical, thermal, optical, and magnetic properties of materials and their technological applications, and superconductivity.

This course studies the relationship between the micro and macro structure properties of material composites. It covers composites applications, functions (mechanical, thermal, electromagnetic, and optical), processing issues, testing, and design of material composites.

Wear of Materials & Corrosion
This course deals with the mechanisms of corrosion, its thermodynamics and kinetics, corrosion rate testing and measurements, forms of corrosion, and environmental variables. It also explores the wear of mechanisms (adhesive, abrasive, erosive), fretting, surface roughness, and wear testing. It considers the coatings for corrosion and wear protection.

This course explains the mechanical design of all engineering materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, glasses, elastomers, and composites); classes of engineering materials; materials, process selection, and optimization for engineering applications; quality control principles; and common mechanical failure mechanisms.

Bircham International University issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the distance learning degree program's major. Bircham University can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.
