MODULE: Tourism & Leisure Management

Program delivered by distance learning higher education up to a maximum of 36 credits. This module may be combined or completed with other online university courses from this faculty.

DESCRIPTION:

This program deals with the complexities of tourism and leisure and it teaches to assume the managerial challenges and responsibilities in this diverse and challenging industry. It considers the links between leisure, recreation and tourism; management theories; and approaches to planning and management in diverse recreational and tourism settings.

This module is applicable to Specialist, Expert, Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. (Doctor) Programs. This distance learning degree program is designed at the postgraduate level – Master’s or Doctoral. This module may be easily adapted to complete the Specialist, Expert or Bachelor’s adult degree program requirements. A further option is the enrollment into the online university courses listed in this module.

* University Course (3 credits): Select 1 subject from this module.

* Specialist Diploma (15 credits): First 5 subjects or select 5 subjects from this module.

* Expert Diploma (21 credits): First 7 subjects or select 7 subjects from this module.

* Bachelor's Degree (130 credits): The Admission certificate issued after submission of the application for admission will show the amount of credit transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete this undergraduate program's major. Additional courses from other modules of this faculty will be assigned in case that the credits displayed on this module are not enough to complete the bachelor's required credits.

* Master's Degree (35 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 13 credits corresponding to a final project to the selected subjects.

* Ph.D. (Doctor) (45 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 18 credits corresponding to a final thesis to the selected subjects.

BIU issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the degree program's major. BIU can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.

Leisure & Recreation

This course provides a social, cultural and economic examination of the impact tourism, leisure and recreation. It covers issues such as the changes in the quality of life of residents of tourist destinations, the social and cultural impacts of tourism, gender relations and sexuality, crime and international security issues, and the economic and political impacts of the hospitality and tourism industry development.

Sustainable Tourism

This course provides a critical examination of the theories and concepts associated with sustainable tourism. It explores the strategies for its implementation and evaluation. It examines the role of the community and the growing importance of alliances in developing and implementing an true sustainable tourism.

Tourism Group Dynamics

This course is a theoretical and applied study of the interactions between individuals within groups in recreational, and tourist settings. It uses a variety of approaches to examine group types, formation, motivation, and patterns of behavior as well as conflict resolution, problem solving, leadership and communication.

Ecological Tourism

This course examines the principles and practices of an environmentally responsible tourism. It emphasizes the preservation of both the natural and cultural resources of a destination and the simultaneous controlled development that safeguards the resources that attract tourists. The economic viability and growth of this type of tourism is also stressed.

Outdoor Center Management

This course examines the philosophies, planning, programming, management and operations of nature, outdoor activity centers. Case studies of established centers will be used to illustrate how differences in philosophy and program are related to various markets, regulations and operations.

Tourism Risk Management

This program investigates the nature and structure of risk in tourist events and recreation environments. Methods to identify, reduce and manage risks will be addressed at both institutional and operational levels. It examines the legal considerations for tourist events and recreation program delivery.

Recreation Resources Management

This course deals with the principles, concepts and theories concerning people's recreational use of cultural and natural settings. It examines cultural and natural resources with their capabilities and limitations, and the laws, policies and institutional arrangements which exist to manage recreation in cultural and natural settings in different countries and environments.

Travel Agency Services

This course explains travel agency and airline operations. It includes industry regulations, codes, geography, tour programs, visa and health requirements, customer service, travel formalities and sales techniques. It also considers different types of customers, their needs and expectations; how to create good customer relations; the selling process, making recommendations and closing the sale.

Recreation Management

This course examines the conceptual and operational aspects of planning and managing for recreation in the context of sustainable and natural environments. This course evaluates the socio-cultural, ecological, economic, entrepreneurial, and managerial dimensions of providing recreation and active tourism opportunities in a multiple diversity of natural environments.

Lodging & Hotel Operations

This course provides an insight of all hospitality functional areas, including reservations, rooms, food and beverage, sales, event management, and accounting. It explores how to make effective managerial, business, and operational decisions based on a thorough understanding of hotel operations, and shows how to improve efficiency while serving guests better.

Travel Agency Management

This course covers skills and procedures to secure successful travel agency operations. I also explains how to start a travel agency as well as the application of fundamental principles and successful practices in developing clientele. It reviews the financial systems found operative in the travel agencies and planning at various levels in travel agency operation.

Tourism Management

This course examines the complexity of tourism industry and the interaction between its various business sectors, tourists, and host destinations. It explains planning and policy making processes for integrated tourism management. It also considers the role of tourist motivation and decision-making, the risk and satisfaction level of the activities offered, and different destinations policies.
