Agroecology via distance learning

 

This program of agroecology deals with the ecology of the food system and it explores a farming approach that is inspired by natural ecosystems. It combines local and scientific knowledge with ecological and social approaches applicable to agricultural systems. Agroecology seeks to optimize the interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment while taking into consideration the social aspects that need to be addressed for a sustainable and fair food system. The main elements of agroecology are interlinked and interdependent.

This course is the intersection of social, cultural, political, and economic demands with our ecosystem and environmental resources. It examines the theoretical and applied basis of environmental policy making, as well as the interaction between political institutions, governmental bodies, interest groups, legislative and administrative actions, and the public.

Soil & Water Conservation
This course reviews the problems, principles, and control of soil erosion by water and wind, land planning for soil conservation, and water management including irrigation and drainage problems.

Natural Resource Economics
This course deals with the economic principles and policy issues in the use of exhaustible and renewable resources including fossil fuels, water, minerals, fisheries, forests, and biodiversity. It considers the management of natural resources on a regional and international scale. It explains how public, economic, and political choices affect environmental degradation and natural resources.

Sustainability
This course of sustainability focuses on how to protect, preserve and make the smartest possible use of the planet's natural resources. It provides an interdisciplinary perspective of the sustainability concept considering sustainable development, geography, environmental policies, ethics, ecology, landscape architecture, city and regional planning, economics, natural resources, sociology, and anthropology. Sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life.

Circular Economy
This course of circular economy explores the design and promotion of products that last and that can be reused, repaired and remanufactured. Circular economy is a production and consumption model that ensures sustainable growth over time. It looks for the optimization of resources, to reduce the consumption of raw materials, and to recover waste by recycling or giving it a second life as a new product.

Agriculture Production
This course reviews the production and management of field crops, including establishment, irrigation, fertilization, pests, harvesting, and the integration of different plants and animals in the agriculture production chain.

Food Science
This course deals with the management of food service systems including purchasing, receiving, regulation of inventory, and factors affecting nutrients in food. It reviews food quality-control parameters (sensory, color, and texture) and added-value such as traditional or novel commodity, ingredient, and process combinations.

Bioprocessing of Byproducts
This course presents the principles of chemistry, microbiology, and engineering applicable to the design of systems for the treatment and utilization of livestock manures and other agricultural byproducts. It explains the bioenergetics of microbial processes, composting agricultural and animal wastes, odor measurement, and toxic control.

Natural Ecosystems Management
This course examines all the issues involved in understanding and managing human use in different natural ecosystems and protected areas (parks, beaches, forests, mountains, lakes, etc...). It integrates human impact into ecosystem management in natural and protected areas.

This course of agroecology centers on food production that makes the best use of nature’s goods and services while not damaging these resources. Food Production Quality
This course reviews the standards, principles, and techniques of food production in different systems. It discusses ingredient control and recipe standardization in addition to food preparation, delivery, and service. Special emphasis is placed on quality assurance and evaluation methods during food production.

Sustainable Agriculture

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Distance Learning Higher Education

 

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week. It also depends on the number of validated credits from previous knowledge and the level of commitment to the studies. More info...
