Aquaculture via distance learning

This program of Aquaculture deals with the breeding and harvesting of fish, shellfish, algae, and other organisms in all types of water environments. It’s a similar concept to agriculture, but with fish instead of plants or livestock. The demand for seafood is increasing, so technology has made it possible to grow food in freshwater, coastal marine waters and the open ocean. Aquaculture is used to produce food and other commercial products, restore habitat and replenish wild stocks, and rebuild populations of threatened and endangered species.

Marine Life
This course reviews the physiology, reproductive biology, anatomy, taxonomy, and ecology of marine life. It also studies the marine organisms and their relationships to the marine environment with emphasis on human interaction with marine ecosystems.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Phycology
This course reviews the identification, physiology, ecology, and evolution of marine and freshwater algae.
Academic Supervisor: Arun Kumar Lahiry

Ichthyology
This course reviews the taxonomy, morphology, physiology, and ecology of fishes, considering the aspects of distribution, ecology, physiology, adaptation, and evolution of fishes. It also explores fish diversity; being the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates that inhabit virtually all aquatic environments.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Water & Air Quality
This course reviews the control technologies used for management of air, water, and wastewater pollutants. It examines the characteristics of air and water quality; their physical, chemical, and bacteriological parameters; and control measures primarily filtration, sedimentation, coagulation, absorption, chemical treatment, and aeration.
Academic Supervisor: Eduard Bes Fuster

Marine Zoology
This course explores the natural history, functional morphology, ecology, distribution, habitat, adaptation, trophic interrelationships, and evolution of marine animals. It shows comparative morphology and biology of marine invertebrates, as well as the morphological, physiological, behavioral, and ecological diversity of fishes of the world.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Marine Ecosystems
This course of marine ecosystems explores the habitats that complete the largest system from the shores to the dark sea floor. The marine ecosystem includes: marshes, tidal zones, estuaries, the mangrove forest, lagoons, sea grass beds, the sea floor, and the coral reefs. Just like every other ecosystem in the world, the aquatic ecosystems rely on each other for maintaining a balanced marine ecosystem.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Bioprocessing of Byproducts
This course presents the principles of chemistry, microbiology, and engineering applicable to the design of systems for the treatment and utilization of livestock manures and other agricultural byproducts. It explains the bioenergetics of microbial processes, composting agricultural and animal wastes, odor measurement, and toxic control.

Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Marine Biology
This course deals with the biological aspects of marine communities from coastal estuaries to deep ocean trenches. It integrates marine biology with aspects of physical, geological, and chemical oceanography in relationship to the marine ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Aquatic Toxicants
This course examines the sources, cycling, and impacts of toxicants in aquatic systems, including acid rain, ground water, fresh water rivers and lakes, estuaries, and the ocean. It deals with processes at the air-water interface, the properties of toxic chemicals that influence biogeochemical cycles, and their toxicity to aquatic organisms and humans.
Academic Supervisor: Eduard Bes Fuster

Aquaculture
This course of Aquaculture studies the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions throughout part or all their lifecycle. Its development can help meet future food needs and ease burdens on natural resources.
