ABOUT BIU RECOGNITION

  • Professional Recognition

A person's reputation depends much on his or her professional career and achievements. It also depends on a good education the individual has acquired, firmly established with a university diploma. At the same time most companies employment criteria is driven by the candidate's know-how, ability to solve problems, and other practical skills, and not just the university degree. Most modern companies today believe that a distance learning degree obtained by correspondence is as valid as a degree obtained by attending classes on campus. In some cases, it is superior. Earning an online diploma in a distance education university demonstrates special skills that are highly regarded at the workplace, such as self-motivation, will power, desire for improvement, personal organization and responsibility. What really matters is the student's learning capacity and ability to perform the job successfully. BIU students and graduates have gotten jobs or promotions in leading companies worldwide. More than 70 % of the students surveyed two years after completing their distance learning program felt a considerable increase in their self-esteem and social status. Most of them had moved on to a better job, had been promoted, or had received a salary raise.

  • Non-Formal Education & Official Recognition

BIU is a provider of non-formal or non-traditional education. Non-formal education programs do not follow the contents and requirements established by a Ministry of Education, thus BIU non-formal distance learning higher education programs can not lead to degrees officially recognized by a Ministry of Education. Officially validated degrees are required for certain government positions and professional licensure. BIU distance learning degrees can not be used for these purposes.

The BIU online university degree and academic transcript can, however, be internationally legalized with The Hague Apostille Certificate or Consulate Legalization (for non-Hague signatory countries) for their use and validation in many countries. This legalization process officially authenticates the signatures and the legality and validity of the documents issued by Bircham International University. Many government departments require that a non-traditional online university degree, such the one issued by BIU, is legalized with The Hague Apostille Certificate or Consulate Legalization for the consideration of its formal validity. The criteria for official degree validation can vary from country to country. This legalization process does not necessarily guarantee the final acceptance of the BIU adult degree programs because the Hague Apostille Certificate or Consulate Legalization may be just one of the several requirements for the final official recognition of the BIU online diploma in a given country. If this is an important issue check online university degree acceptance requirements and government regulations in advance and prior to enrollment.

  • Accreditation
In nearly every country, higher education is controlled and monitored by the national government, which promulgates higher education policy. As free markets, open frontiers, and individualism spread around the world, many nations are adapting their higher education systems to be more liberal, competitive and diverse. Accreditation is one of the major factors behind this global trend. Accreditation reflects the comparative advantages of numerous and diverse institutions and methods of graduate education, and respects its core values of autonomy, self-governance, scholarship, and the assurance of academic quality through peer review. Accreditation is an institutional procedure that universities seek to complete in order to bring their academic programs up to quality standards. The process of accreditation is non-governmental and voluntary; that is, universities appear before a private, regional or professional association (the one to which they wish to belong) and submit an application. The accrediting institution then carries out an overall assessment of the university, and if the results are satisfactory, the school is accredited. It is important to point out that each accrediting organization holds its own accrediting criteria. There are no worldwide accreditation standards.

  • Accreditation in the USA
The United States of America has no Federal Ministry of Education or other centralized authority exercising single national control over postsecondary educational institutions. As a consequence, American educational institutions can vary widely in character and quality of their programs. For this reason, accreditation becomes an important reference in the USA when it comes to evaluate a degree or an educational institution.

BIU is accredited, recognized or member of several international bodies and meets the quality standards of such organizations in different countries. None of these international bodies are recognized by CHEA USA (Council of Higher Education Accreditation). CHEA is a USA non-governmental independent association of 3,000 degree-granting traditional universities. CHEA recognizes 60 institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations that provide voluntary and self-regulation processes to ensure academic quality. CHEA accreditation is important in the USA for two reasons: it provides standards in academic mobility in a country whose Constitution establishes freedom of education, and it distributes US Federal Grants to its members, except distance learning higher education. Accreditation is not equivalent to legality or recognition, it is a non-governmental and voluntary quality standard.

  • Academic Acceptance
A BIU graduate wishing to continue a program at another university should verify first that the credits obtained at BIU may be transferable to that university. There are institutions reluctant to accept credits obtained through distance learning adult degree programs, from non-formal education or from non-CHEA accredited institutions. In some cases, partial credit transfer may be accepted. Accreditation (including CHEA) does not provide automatic acceptance and validation of the credits earned at other institutions, nor does it guarantee the acceptance of graduates by employers. Acceptance of students or graduates is always the prerogative of the receiving institution or employer. For these reasons, students should take additional measures to determine, prior to enrollment, whether or not their educational goals will be met through studying at a particular institution.

Bircham International University adult degree programs and transcripts meet the current higher education guidelines set forth by the European Union (European Credit Transfer System [ECTS]) as well as the USA (Generally Accepted Accrediting Practices [GAAP]). BIU distance learning degrees include the required Diploma Supplement, and BIU transcripts reflect the ECTS equivalents to BIU earned credits according to the European Higher Education guidelines.

1 BIU credit = 1 USA semester credit (15 hours of learning) = 2 ECTS credits (30 hours of study)
BIU is also an authorized provider of CEUs (Continuing Education Units) recognized by IACET - International Association of Continuing Education & Training. CEUs are accepted by many educational institutions worldwide.

  • Academic Quality
The BIU learning system has been admitted by the European Union as a reference stand point for adult education. BIU learning proposal has been revised and approved by the OAPEE, the National Agency from the Ministry of Education in Spain responsible of the review of any adult education proposal for the Grundtvig program of the European Union. This achievement constitutes and clear indicator of the quality and efficiency of the BIU educational system. Still, this approval of our distance learning proposal does not affect the recognition status of BIU degrees.

Bircham Internacional University keeps working on the recognition of its dynamic and effective adult higher education approach. BIU degree programs and pedagogy do not follow the traditional regulations established by the Ministry of Education and consequently BIU is considered a provider of non formal higher education. Although, the fact that BIU pedagogy has been selected and approved by the European Union means that the EU priority in the recognition and validation of non formal education initiatives is now a reality.

  • Consumer Protection
Bircham International University is a provider of non-formal education and as such no further authorization from a Ministry of Education is required. BIU activity is authorized by its registration under section 932.2 (Spain Non Formal Higher Education). The Spain Ministry of Consumer Affairs monitors BIU activity, the non-formal nature of the programs offered and the quality of instruction delivered. The applicable law is Decreto 84/2004 de 13 de Mayo (Enseñanza General) During the year 2005, the Spain National Institute of Consumer Affairs (Instituto Nacional de Consumo - INC) from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs awarded BIU with the official distinction of consumer protection. This seal provides a solid international consumer protection and a unique guarantee to all BIU students in Spain, Europe and worldwide.

  • Professional Practice
Each profession will surely have different entry to practice requirements. Potential students are advised to check prior to enrollment as to whether a BIU distance learning degree will qualify them for the professional status required to practice in any particular jurisdiction. There are several practice requirement options for a specific profession within the different provinces, states or countries. Some only accept a degree recognized by the Ministry of Education; others accept an online diploma legalized by the Hague Apostille Certificate; others will accept qualifications endorsed by a professional association. Professional practice may depend both on student experience and career, not just on the online university degree. In other words, one student may qualify for practice but another may not in spite of the fact that both hold the same distance learning degree from the same university. Joining proper associations is the best way to become an updated professional. You may check the list of recommended associations. You may also find some multinational and well known companies where BIU students, graduates and staff got jobs and/or promotions.
