Bachelor's Degree - Computer Science

Bioinformatics via distance learning

This Bachelor's Degree of bioinformatics reviews the application of computational technology, data science, mathematics and statistics to handle the rapidly growing repository of information related to biological data and molecular biology, especially for the field of genetics and genomics. Apart from analysis of genome sequence data (Human Genome Project), bioinformatics is being used for a vast array of other important tasks, including the analysis of gene variation and expression, analysis and prediction of gene and protein structure and function, prediction and detection of gene regulation networks, simulation of biological environments, etc…

Learning outcomes: Bachelor's - Bioinformatics

The following learning outcomes are compatible with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for lifelong learning and continuing education. The EQF directives facilitate acceptance of this course credits by many higher education institution. These learning outcomes are achieved after completion of this course with a passing grade. Better grades will demonstrate higher analysis, evaluation and critical thinking skills. More info...

EQF LEVEL 4. Specialized knowledge and comprehension.
Outcome resulting from comprehensive reading and classification of the main concepts of the book.

After a comprehensive reading of the course suggested textbook, the student will explain the interrelationships, hierarchy, and overall meaning of Bioinformatics key concepts. The selected concepts will then become the skeleton for the development of the required written report. Several reviews and adjustments of the course contents will be necessary to meet the 20 to 35 pages report length limits and demonstrate a solid and specialized knowledge about Bioinformatics. More info...

EQF LEVEL 5. Applicable knowledge and problem resolution.
Outcome resulting from course content analysis and practical applications included in the report.

The student is required to illustrate the contents with examples of practical application or case studies to analyze the effect and potential results of the application of the knowledge about Bioinformatics. This process also involves the transformation of the information learned: graphic and numeric data into verbal and vice versa; as well as interpreting, explaining, and summarizing the main ideas of Bioinformatics and their applicability in the professional field of Computer Science.
