This course examines the physical and engineering properties of soils considering soil mechanics, soil composition, soil structure, soil consolidation, shear strength, effective stress principle, water flow through soil, stability analysis of slope, earth pressure, bearing capacity, soil dynamics, ground motion, vibration, and earthquake engineering.

Geotechnical Analysis
This course reviews the geotechnical testing, modelling, and analysis to evaluate prediction versus performance in geotechnical engineering. It also explores the role of rocks and soils as engineering materials, as well as the distribution of rocks at or below the surface; hydrologic influences, geologic exploration of engineering sites, mapping, underground excavations, slopes, reservoirs, and dam sites.

This course focuses on the processes surrounding and causing volcanoes and earthquakes as well as their impact on human culture, their prediction, and mitigation.

This course examines the relationships between processing, properties, structure, and the behavior of materials. It considers the behavior of ceramics, metals, polymers, composites, compound semiconductors, magnetic systems, and biological hard tissues.

This course explores special problems in ground retaining structures and construction-related soil engineering. It reviews diaphragm walls, continuous bored piles, cofferdams, shoring and underpinning methods, and other ground retaining structures.

Rock & Fluid Properties
This course examines reservoir rock and fluid properties, flow behavior in reservoir rocks, behavior of gas in underground storage caverns, and their interrelation.

Geomorphology
This course centers on the dynamic processes that sculpt the Earth’s surface. These processes include weathering, erosion, sediment deposition by water, wind, ice, and mass-wasting. It considers the physical processes, environmental impact and remediation, and engineering capabilities of soils, fluvial processes, glacial deposits, landslides, and coastal processes.

Seismology
This course of seismology studies earthquakes and seismic waves that move through and around the earth. It also reviews earthquake environmental effects such as tsunamis as well as diverse seismic sources such as volcanic, tectonic, glacial, fluvial, oceanic, atmospheric, and artificial processes such as explosions.

This course reviews the principles of seismology, geomagnetism, heat flow, and gravity as applied to problems such as earth structure and earthquake prediction.

Geotechnical Engineering
This course explains the characteristics of geological materials; soil and rock classifications; physical, mechanical, and hydraulic properties; stress principles; soil and rock improvement; seepage, consolidation; stress distribution; and settlement analysis. It discusses shear strength, bearing capacity, lateral earth pressures, slope stability, and underground construction. It examines the design of shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, tunnels, and other earth and rock structures.

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week.
