This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. Duration - Biotechnology Online via distance learning

For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week. It also depends on the number of validated credits from previous knowledge and the level of commitment to the studies.

Food Preservation
This course examines the fundamental principles of food preservation namely, freezing and thawing, thermal processing and canning, fermentation, and dehydration. It investigates the major causes of food microbial and chemical degradation and how to preserve its nutritional value. It also highlights topics on food safety and consumer appeal.

Food Processing
This course discusses the methods used to preserve food namely cooling, freezing, heating, dehydration, concentration, irradiation, fermentation, and chemicals. It highlights new trends in food preservation and explains the molecular structure of major food components and how they are altered by processing and preservation.

Food Biotechnology
This course studies the fundamentals of bioprocess engineering, bioseparation, and food biotechnology in addition to fermentation principles, design, and operation. It reviews the sources, types, and control of biological contamination during harvesting, processing, and storage, while stressing on biotechnology sanitation.

Cell Development
This course examines the genetic, molecular, and functional aspects of cellular development. It covers genome structure and function; gametogenesis; informational macromolecules; cell cycle control; gene-regulatory hierarchies in pattern formation, sex determination, cell-cell interaction, signal transduction, and hormone regulation; control of cell lineage and specification of cell type; and methods of genetic manipulation and modification.

Cell Bioenergetics
This course discusses biochemical thermodynamics, kinetics, and bioenergetics. It considers topics such as cell metabolism, photosynthesis, lipids, and membranes. It also reviews the relevant bioenergetic principles of photosynthesis, bioluminescence, photoinactivation, and mutation.

Molecular Genetics
This course studies the nature, replication, regulation, and mode of action of genetic material. It details the classical transmission genetics and modern molecular genetics, including current observations and concepts of the nature, organization, function, and regulation of the expression of genetic material.

Agricultural Biotechnology
This course reviews the theory, principles, and techniques of molecular biology and its applications in agriculture and animal production. Humans have historically altered plants to meet food needs. It also explores the impacts of biotechnology from different perspectives.

Biosystems Engineering
This course explores the application of engineering sciences to energy and mass balances in agricultural and biological systems. Emphasis is on solving engineering problems in the areas of air and water vapor systems, machine systems, food systems, grain processing, hydrologic systems, electrical systems, and mass and energy transport in cells and microbes.

Bioprocessing of Byproducts
This course presents the principles of chemistry, microbiology, and engineering applicable to the design of systems for the treatment and utilization of livestock manures and other agricultural byproducts. It explains the bioenergetics of microbial processes, composting agricultural and animal wastes, odor measurement, and toxic control.

Industrial Microbiology
This course explores the role of microorganisms in food and other industrial processes and emphasizes on bacteria, yeasts, and molds.

Genetic Improvement
This course deals with the past, present, and future of genetic improvement with emphasis on the genetic principles underlying plant and animal breeding, and on molecular biological principles underlying genetic analysis and engineering.
