Bioethics via distance learning

This program of bioethics explores the moral and ethical issues emerging from the advances, policy and practice in biology and medicine. Bioethics are concerned with the ethical questions that arise in the relationships among life sciences, biotechnology, medicine and medical ethics, politics, law, theology and philosophy. Some examples of issues studied by bioethics are: organ donation and transplantation, genetic research, sexuality and gender, death and dying, ethical treatment of animals and environmental concerns. Bioethics involves studying about an achieving an equilibrium between benefits, harm and duties in biology and medicine.

Life Science
This course explores the origin and nature of life, from simple single-cell to complex plants, animals, and human beings. It also covers the diversity and unity in the living world by studying the forms and organization of bacteria and other cells, the specialized structure of the human body, and how the organism is regenerated, maintained, and repaired.
Academic Supervisor: Mohammad Athar

Principles of Ethics
This course deals with the core principles of ethics: beneficence (do good in all our actions), nonmaleficence (do not intend to harm), autonomy (respect the autonomy and dignity of other persons), and justice (provide others with whatever they are owed or deserve). A moral precept is an idea or opinion that's driven by a desire to be good. An ethical code is a set of rules that defines allowable actions or correct behavior.
Academic Supervisor: Agusti Guisasola Prados

Bird & Mammal Conservation
This course presents the principles associated with management of birds and mammals in the wild while emphasizing on the ecology and management of their habitats. It examines the theory and methods of sampling and analyzing population and habitat data, estimation of population size, survival, recruitment, and habitat selection.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa

Human Biology
This course discusses the development of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems while integrating molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and diversity. It specifically covers the biology topics that are of relevance to humans, their heath and sickness. It also describes how the human organism is maintained and healed.
Academic Supervisor: Daniel Scott Janik

Sexual Behavior
This course examines the development and expression of sexual behavior as a complex psychological, socio-cultural, biological, and historical phenomenon. It includes research methods in human sexuality; biological bases of sexual behavior; sexual arousal and response; gender identity and gender roles; attraction and love; sexual orientation; sexuality across the life cycle; sexual dysfunctions and sex therapy; safer sex and STD prevention; atypical sexual variations; sexual coercion, and sexual abuse and treatment.
Academic Supervisor: Fernando Miralles

Genetic Improvement
This course deals with the past, present, and future of genetic improvement with emphasis on the genetic principles underlying plant and animal breeding, and on molecular biological principles underlying genetic analysis and engineering. It explores the use of hormones and DNA for genome modification and improvement.
Academic Supervisor: Jorge Poveda Arias

Ecology & Human Impact
This course studies the relationships of live organisms, including humans, to their environment at the individual, population, and community level. It includes adaptations to the physical environment, competition, concept of the niche, population dynamics, predator-prey interactions, herbivore effects, community ecology, ecosystem structure and stability, and the use and management of resources by the human beings.
Academic Supervisor: Gonzalo de la Fuente de Val

Ethical Dilemmas
This course explores the ethical dilemmas or ethical paradox, a decision-making problem between two possible moral imperatives, neither of which is unambiguously acceptable or preferable. The complexity arises out of the situational conflict in which obeying would result in transgressing another. Ethical dilemmas may be invoked to refute an ethical system or moral code, or to improve it so as to resolve the paradox.
Academic Supervisor: Agusti Guisasola Prados

Animal Research
This course of animal research deals with all aspects of animal testing and the use of non-human animals in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study. On one hand, animal experiments produce such great benefits for humanity that it is morally acceptable to harm a few animals. On the other hand, the level of suffering and the number of animals involved are both so high that the benefits to humanity don't provide moral justification for animal research.
Academic Supervisor: Mohammad Athar

Molecular Gene Control
This course explores the control of genes and the mechanisms of their regulation at the level of transcription, chromatin structure, DNA methylation, RNA processing, mRNA localization, and protein synthesis and degradation.
Academic Supervisor: Jorge Poveda Arias

Biotechnology
Biotechnology deals with the deliberate manipulation of biological systems, cells or cell components, for the efficient manufacture or processing of useful products. This course explores how the biological capabilities of living organisms may be used to obtain food, fuel and medicines.
Academic Supervisor: Girish Kumar Srivastava

Genetic Technology
This course explains how genetics are used as a technological tool to resolve various practical problems in biotechnology, agriculture, the environment, and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Academic Supervisor: Arun Kumar Lahiry

Agricultural Biotechnology
This course reviews the theory, principles, and techniques of molecular biology and its applications in agriculture and animal production. Humans have historically altered plants to meet food needs. It also explores the impacts of biotechnology from different perspectives.
Academic Supervisor: Girish Kumar Srivastava

Food Biotechnology
This course studies the fundamentals of bioprocess engineering, bioseparation, and food biotechnology in addition to fermentation principles, design, and operation. It reviews the sources, types, and control of biological contamination during harvesting, processing, and storage, while stressing on biotechnology sanitation.
Academic Supervisor: Girish Kumar Srivastava

Bioethics
This course of bioethics deals with the equilibrium between benefits, harm and duties resulting from the advances, policy and practice in biology and medicine. It deals with the morals and ethics of physician patient relationship, organ donation and transplantation, assisted reproductive techniques, genetic research, death and dying, disability issues, clinical trials with humans and animals and environmental concerns, among others.
Academic Supervisor: Jorge Poveda Arias
