DESCRIPTION:
Ayurveda is a traditional Indian system of medicine. It means the science of life and youth. It is a combination of science and philosophy which details the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components necessary for holistic health. The fundamental belief of Ayurveda is that everything within the universe, including ourselves, is composed of vibrating energy. We should live in a way that encourages a balance of energies. This program explores the multiple components of detoxification, diet, exercise, herbs and techniques which work together to contribute to a healthy and balanced way of life.

This module is applicable to Specialist, Expert, Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. (Doctor) Programs. This distance learning degree program is designed at the postgraduate level – Master’s or Doctoral. This module may be easily adapted to complete the Specialist, Expert or Bachelor’s adult degree program requirements. A further option is the enrollment into the online university courses listed in this module.
* University Course (3 credits): Select 1 subject from this module.
* Specialist Diploma (15 credits): First 5 subjects or select 5 subjects from this module.
* Expert Diploma (21 credits): First 7 subjects or select 7 subjects from this module.
* Bachelor's Degree (130 credits): The Admission certificate issued after submission of the application for admission will show the amount of credit transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete this undergraduate program's major. Additional courses from other modules of this faculty will be assigned in case that the credits displayed on this module are not enough to complete the bachelor's required credits.
* Master's Degree (35 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 13 credits corresponding to a final project to the selected subjects.
* Ph.D. (Doctor) (45 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 18 credits corresponding to a final thesis to the selected subjects.
BIU issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the degree program's major. BIU can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.

Natural Health Science
The philosophy of natural health sciences recognizes that when good conditions for health exist, healing will prevail. Traditional water therapies, herbs, physical therapy and nutrition when properly utilized, can facilitate the self-healing process within the body. This course describes how to recognize underlying root-causes of illness and the principles governing natural health and healing.

Holistic Nutrition
This course explores the role of nutrition for a healthy mind, body and spirit, the role of diet in disease prevention and wellness, the interdependence between eating choices and environmental sustainability, and the principles and practical uses of various alternative nutritional approaches. It also explains how to differentiate whole food supplements versus synthetic supplements.

Diets & Fasting
This course provides an analysis and evaluation of various dietary regimes focusing on nutritional, spiritual and social belief systems concerning food: Vegetarianism, macrobiotics, raw food, food combining, and hereditary predisposition. It explains the benefits of fasting and different approaches to tissue cleansing and detoxification. It finally considers mental, emotional, physical and spiritual issues concerning diets and fasting.

Ayurveda - Science of Life
This course studies the role of philosophy in Ayurveda and how to distinguish different aspects of consciousness, health and wellness from an Ayurvedic perspective. It explains the different constitutional types, basic physiological functions, the role of ayurvedic nutrition in health and how to apply the concept of Agni in the context of digestion and metabolism for health maintenance. The history of Ayurveda is viewed in relation to the Vedas and its philosophy (Vedanta). This course shows how to promote healing and rejuvenation.

Manual Therapies / Massage
This course presents the theoretical basis for the use of massage and touch therapies to promote healing through the study of the physiology of the body and the bioenergetic fields. It shows the principles of several touch therapies considering the points of view of Western and Oriental techniques.

Physical Therapy
This course provides a comprehensive knowledge of physical therapy for treatment of injuries, bodily weaknesses and defects through physical remedies such as massage, exercise, gymnastics, light, heat, cold, water and mechanical devices. It presents the physiological benefits of exercise in the correction of structural imbalances and the value of stretching, deep breathing, yoga, aerobic and non-aerobic activities for maintaining optimum health.

Colon Therapy
This course presents the significance of colon hygiene in health recovery and organic aspects such as absorption and assimilation of nutrients, cleansing procedures and detoxification, colon hydrotherapy, parasites and other related pathological disorders. It details the therapeutic programs designed to enhance or alleviate these situations.

Biochemical Organic Balance
Every disease, symptom, discharge, and pain indicates a chemical imbalance in the body. A body that is chemically well-balanced will normalize itself. This course focuses on the chemical elements, their structure and their application, including vitamins, enzymes, proteins, starches, prostaglandins, and minerals found in foods in order to understand the biochemical organic balance from which health and well-being spring.

Therapeutic Physiology
This course explains the mechanisms of action and interaction of the physiological body systems with pathological and clinical considerations. It presents a systems rather than a regional approach which facilitates the therapist focus on the relationship between structures and function.

Yoga Therapy
This course presents the therapeutic use of yoga. It explores common health problems and the application of yoga asana, breathing and meditation as a modality of healing. It reviews the effects of yoga in the body structure, cellular dynamics, organs response mechanisms and neurology. It also involve control techniques and treatments for common conditions.

Herbology / Phytotherapy
Nature acts through herbs triggering the healing mechanisms in the body and mind to restore health. This course provides an analysis of the properties, functions, principles of combinations, preparation, dosage administration, and contraindications of herbal prescriptions. It describes the utilization of herbs to prepare medicinal substances which work in harmony with the human system, thus facilitating health and recovery.

Ayurvedic Medicine
In Ayurveda, the process of disease is a progression from the buildup of Ama (metabolic toxins) to the actual appearance of the symptoms of disease. This process is contrasted to that of allopathic medicine. Imbalances are examined in relation to each core constitution. According to Ayurvedic principles, each stage has its solution to return a person back to health: Cleansing regimes, medicinal plants, ayurvedic nutrition, lifestyle and body therapies. Ayurveda has proven useful in the restoration of vitality, and the treatment of chronic disease and immune system disorders.
