MODULE: TCM Traditional Chinese Medicine

Program delivered by distance learning higher education up to a maximum of 24 credits. This module may be combined or completed with other online university courses from this faculty.

DESCRIPTION:

The philosophy, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques of Oriental Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine ("TCM"). The purpose of the program is to allow the student to integrate the concepts and techniques of Oriental Medicine into naturopathic practice. This includes applying TCM principles to the human body; having appreciation for relationships between the Oriental zangfu ("organs"); and having a deep understanding of the Oriental modes of diagnosis. After making a thorough diagnosis, students will apply treatment principles and techniques to many disease patterns for rebalancing the Qi of the patient. Techniques learned will include, acupressure, moxibustion, tui na, Chinese herbs and nutrition.

This module is applicable to Specialist, Expert, Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. (Doctor) Programs. This distance learning degree program is designed at the postgraduate level – Master’s or Doctoral. This module may be easily adapted to complete the Specialist, Expert or Bachelor’s adult degree program requirements. A further option is the enrollment into the online university courses listed in this module.

* University Course (3 credits): Select 1 subject from this module.

* Specialist Diploma (15 credits): First 5 subjects or select 5 subjects from this module.

* Expert Diploma (21 credits): First 7 subjects or select 7 subjects from this module.

* Bachelor's Degree (130 credits): The Admission certificate issued after submission of the application for admission will show the amount of credit transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete this undergraduate program's major. Additional courses from other modules of this faculty will be assigned in case that the credits displayed on this module are not enough to complete the bachelor's required credits.

* Master's Degree (35 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 13 credits corresponding to a final project to the selected subjects.

* Ph.D. (Doctor) (45 credits): Select from 3 to 9 subjects from this module depending on the amount of credits transferred from previous education and experience. Add 18 credits corresponding to a final thesis to the selected subjects.

BIU issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the degree program's major. BIU can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.

Natural Health Science

The philosophy of natural health sciences recognizes that when good conditions for health exist, healing will prevail. Traditional water therapies, herbs, physical therapy and nutrition when properly utilized, can facilitate the self-healing process within the body. This course describes how to recognize underlying root-causes of illness and the principles governing natural health and healing.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

This course explains the Traditional Chinese Medicine views of health and disease, diagnostic techniques, treatment modalities, herbal medicine and nutrition, including concepts such as Yin/Yang, five elements, vital substances, Zang Fu organs and acupressure channels. It explores the theories of disease including etiology, pathology, and treatment.

Chinese Herbology

This course provides a study of Chinese medicinal herbs according to function and therapeutic use, classification, taste, energy, actions and indications, dosage, contraindications and preparation. It describes the use of herbs for relieving exterior, purging interior, clearing heat, dissolving dampness, warming interior, opening orifice, calming shen, extinguishing wind, regulating Qi, and activating blood.

TCM Diagnosis

This course explains the ancient methods of inquiry, observation, auscultation, olfaction, and palpation, integrated with classical tongue and pulse assessments, with differential diagnostic procedures based on the Eight Principles, Zang Fu Organs and Five Element Theory, for determining the presenting patterns of disharmony or disease. It also uses facial characteristics such as markings, shapes, and colorings as evidence of emotional dysfunction and of physical energy blockages in the body resulting in organ system imbalances.

TCM Internal Medicine

This course examines common diseases according to TCM. It explains diagnoses and treatment principles of acupressure and herbal prescriptions, particularly for respiratory, digestive, metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological and urogenital disorders. The TCM etiology and pathology are also integrated with corresponding concepts from Western Clinical Medicine. It provides a selection of treatment modalities.

Meridians Anatomy

This course presents the theory of Meridians, the internal and external courses of the Twelve Meridians, Eight Extra Meridians, the Collateral, and the Muscle/Tendon Meridians. It offers a study of the acupoints of the major Meridians with topographical and deep anatomy as it relates to their locations. It includes the micro-system of ear acupuncture points.

Acupoints & Acupressure

This course presents the major principles of acupoint selection and therapy for various diseases. Acupressure stimulates the acupuncture point locations on meridian pathways to facilitate healing through the movement of Qi energy. This is the theory of Tui-Na (manipulative therapy) in the treatment of various disorders.

Qi Energy Development

This course introduces the principles and practices of the development of Qi, our internal energy. It surveys the major forms of balancing the Qi, with emphasis on exercises and techniques to become aware of Qi, to enhance the circulation of Qi throughout the body, and to finally improve health using our internal energy.
