This course presents both the theoretical and practical aspects of assessing environmental impact in order to support a policy that leads to the restoration and conservation of animal and plant diversity. It covers the structure and function of disturbed ecosystems and provides adequate the means to evaluate environmental degradation levels and the impact of human activity on environmental health and contamination.
Academic Supervisor: Eduard Bes Fuster

Ecosystems
This course surveys the structure and functioning of major terrestrial ecosystems. It considers the dynamics of ecosystems, landscape ecology, the methods of ecosystem analysis, energy flow, nutrient cycling, community dynamics, issues of scale, models, and ecosystem properties of self-organization, resilience, and stability.
Academic Supervisor: Gonzalo de la Fuente de Val

Earth Science
This course examines the structure of Earth including plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. It reviews the natural processes operating on Earth such as erosion, mass wasting, glaciation permafrost, rivers, etc. It also covers Earth history; stratigraphic and paleontologic concepts; and minerals and non-renewable earth resources and their exploitation. It explores natural hazards and global change and the primary considerations for survival in addition to water, food, and energy supplies, soil loss, and waste disposal.
Academic Supervisor: Mina Benjouali

Human Habitat
This course studies the concepts, methods, techniques, and applications for the analysis of the human habitat, settlements, distribution, population, and cultural environment. It explores the relation of human habitats with available land space, geography, overpopulation, and ecological impact.
Academic Supervisor: Mohammed Said Belkassem

Climate Change
This course studies the science of climate change and the latest available research and scientific data: new patterns of rainfall, droughts, weather events, and global warming. It also analyses the social changes and adaptations that human communities will have to consider, the political implications of climate change, and the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Academic Supervisor: Eduard Bes Fuster

Climatology
This course explores the global and surface energy balance, the hydrologic cycle, the influence on climate of the atmospheric and oceanic circulation, climate history, sensitivity, modeling, and natural and anthropogenic change. It also deals with the thermodynamics of cloud and precipitation: nucleation, drop growth by condensation, collection and coalescence processes, drop breakup, and ice crystal growth accretion and aggregation.
Academic Supervisor: Mina Benjouali

Hydrology
This course introduces the main components of the hydrologic cycle including precipitation processes, evapotranspiration, soil water and groundwater flow, and surface water features. Emphasis is placed on the atmospheric and geologic processes controlling water movement in the cycle at the global and local scales, considering the environmental impacts of urbanization and land-use management.
Academic Supervisor: Abdul Qayeum Karim

Environmental Science
This course deals with relevant theories from physical sciences, ecology, economics, political science, and other fields related to environmental studies. It presents an interdisciplinary approach to the interaction of humans and biological systems with the environment. It examines environmental problems, their prevention, and possible solutions.
Academic Supervisor: Gonzalo de la Fuente de Val

Natural Resource Economics
This course deals with the economic principles and policy issues in the use of exhaustible and renewable resources including fossil fuels, water, minerals, fisheries, forests, and biodiversity. It considers the management of natural resources on a regional and international scale. It explains how public, economic, and political choices affect environmental degradation and natural resources.
Academic Supervisor: Dimitrios Nikolaou Koumparoulis

Oceanography
Oceans cover seventy percent of the Earth’s surface, regulating our climate and maintaining our atmosphere. They also contain virtually all the known chemical elements. This course deals with the aspects of geology, chemistry, physics, climatology, environmental science, and biology as applied to oceans. It covers topics like underwater volcanoes, the greenhouse effect, the El Niño phenomenon and its link to droughts and floods, and the global view of ocean properties.
Academic Supervisor: José Luis Corona Lisboa
