Wood Science via distance learning

 

This program combines the study of wood structure with the properties and technology of major wood products. It introduces wood as an industrial raw material and stresses on topics such as industrial processing and trees physiology and development. It explores contemporary forest products namely the production of wood from shavings and sawdust. It discusses the development of composite materials, adhesives, and finishes for the past 20 years. It investigates topics such as the nature of wood and its properties, the basics of wood technology, woodworker's raw materials, the best ways to cut, season, join, bend, fasten, and finish wood, and finally, the crucial interaction of wood with moisture.

This course explores the design methods related to wood structures. It examines the nature of wood as a building material, plywood, glued laminated wood, timber piles and pile foundations, pole buildings, and conventional wood building framing.

Biofuels & Bioenergy
This course covers the alternative and renewable fuels derived from biological sources and their applications as an energy source for homes, industry, and transportation. Wood, urban, and agricultural solid waste are discussed as potential sources of energy conversion. In addition, the production of methane and alcohol-based fuels and their roles as a transportation fuel are considered an opportunity to replace fossil-based fuels. Bio-diesel and vegetable oil topics are necessary to show a true alternate energy source for internal combustion engines.

After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail.
