This program creates a bridge between the worlds of child care and early education and preprimary and primary programs. Ideas are effectively presented and designed to give students a cohesive view of the what, why, and how of developmentally appropriate practices. It addresses various aspects (age, individual, social and cultural) of adaptation. It is designed for current and future early childhood professionals who work with children aged three to twelve. Also, this program covers the characteristics of students with special needs, the latest assistive technologies, and the new definitions and classifications of developmental challenges.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Distance Learning Higher Education

 

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. Students enrolling into this distance education program should be aware that:
1. Location: Bircham International University needs a functional geographical location to ship the book and materials for successful completion of this program of study.
2. Communication: Email, courier, phone are key communication instruments with Bircham University that play an important role in the progress and support of this program of study.
3. Capacity: Any impediment, physical or psychological, to read a book and write a report must be communicated to Bircham International University prior to enrollment into this distance learning program.
4. Technology: No specific technology is required to complete this distance education program.

Duration - Childhood & Special Education Online via distance learning

For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week. It also depends on the number of validated credits from previous knowledge and the level of commitment to the studies.

This course presents the developmental needs of children from birth to age five. It shows how to support children’s physical development, encourage cognitive learning and the development of communication skills, and enhance creative expression. It considers different program models and instructional strategies.

This course shows how to ensure the safety and health of children in early childhood programs, and to establish developmentally appropriate learning environments for young children from birth to age five. It examines avenues of ongoing observation, improvement, and development for teachers and caregivers of young children.

This course presents how to support the social and emotional development of young children and provide positive guidance. It explores ways to work effectively with families, and develop program management skills related to observing children and delivering appropriate curriculum.

Child Development: Language, Math & Science
This course explores ways in which children; starting from infancy; acquire language, develop the basis of literacy, and come to understand their social world. It also focuses on the ways in which children construct knowledge through play and exploration, and ways of helping children develop early math concepts, engage in scientific explorations, and engage in creative problem solving.

Child Observation & Guidance
This course provides guidance to observe children in structured and unstructured situations, to record these observations, and how to use them to assess the strengths and needs of individual children. Guidelines include how to properly conduct observations, keep records, and assess data for curriculum planning.

Children with Special Needs
This course deals with the characteristics of learners with special needs, as well as some of the latest assisting technologies, and new definition and classification system for mental retardation. It explores child's developmental readiness, learning styles, and social-emotional needs. It shows ways of adapting the classroom to meet the needs of children with special requirements.

Gifted & Talented Children
This course examines the various theories of intelligence in relation to talented students. Emphasis is on the following: service delivery models, student selection, curriculum development, program implementation, meeting the social and emotional needs of talented students, program evaluation, and creativity and talent development.

This course reviews the principles of learning and memory by examining various learning theories, memory research, perception, information processing, and problem-solving. How are memories stored and retrieved? How is sensory input converted to subjective perception? Is the brain a general-purpose learning machine or a toolbox of innate, specialized processors?

Cognitive Development
This course focuses on the theories and models of learning as applied to the fields of education, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence. It reviews different theoretical orientations to learning and memory, metacognition, analogy, language acquisition, reading, writing, mathematics, concept learning, skill acquisition, and self regulated learning.

Disabilities & Assistive Technology
This course is designed to help professionals in schools understand assistive technology for students with disabilities. It focuses on students with mild mental handicaps, learning disabilities, or emotional disturbances. It also explains teaching strategies for students with disabilities including: autism, brain injury, deafness, blindness, orthopedic and other health impairments, and multiple handicaps.

This course provides a framework for understanding current research in the area of curriculum and methods of teaching students with exceptionalities, with emphasis on portfolio assessment and learning styles. This course discusses how to support children’s native languages as they transition into the acquisition of a second language. Please send this application and enclosed documents to the corresponding BIU Office and allow ten business days for processing. * Include copies of diplomas, transcripts, relevant documents; and
* Include any additional program proposal, scholarship request, etc. (optional).

 

Bircham International University issues an admission certificate after receiving your complete application for admission. This document will show the amount of credits transferred and validated from previous education and experience, and the amount of credits required to complete the distance learning degree program's major. Bircham University can not perform this evaluation without the complete application for admission.
