This program presents the principles of translation and interpretation with special emphasis on theory, text analysis, effective research methods, and team work. It considers the particular characteristics of business, technical, and legal texts; the theory of translating literature; and the methods for dealing with diverse information media. Special Considerations of this program: The students are required to master the two languages involved. Proof on language level is required prior to admission. The student is required to present three papers (each with 3 pages minimum) of technical, legal, and literary translation, respectively.

Writing Fundamentals & Style
This course provides instructions in grammar, sentence, and paragraph structure, elements of composition and essay writing including theme focus, development of central idea, exposition, and argumentation. It shows how to compose clear and concise essays using various expository modes such as definition, exemplification, process, analysis, cause and effect, comparison, and contrast. It considers several writing styles and approaches to both literary and non-literary texts.

Literature: Forms, Genres, History
This course examines how literary forms and genres shape our reading of texts; how these forms and genres change over time; and how literary forms and genres manifest themselves in different cultural traditions. It focuses on different literary themes namely the motive of generational conflict, the human potential for both violence and compassion, death and transfiguration, and women.

This course deals with the use and abuse of spoken and written English. It studies and evaluates the use of language for various purposes (e.g., colloquial, scientific, legal, political, commercial, journalistic, and literary) in order to increase critical awareness and help to write clearly and effectively. It examines factual, emotive, scientific, and imaginative writing, as well as relevance, context, meaning, tone, feeling, and intention.

The Communication Process
This course introduces the processes that govern message delivery and reception. It covers intrapersonal and interpersonal communication, non-verbal communication, language and verbal interaction, group communication, and conflict management. It considers the impact of context, situation, perception, culture, medium, and message on communication.

Business Communications
This course describes strategies for planning managerial communications and develop skills in oral and written reporting and persuasion. It looks at how new technologies are changing the way people in business communicate, and the implications those changes have on organizations. It considers interviewing, listening, meeting planning, presentations, and telecommunication.

Multicultural Diversity
The course shows how to deal with a different culture. It covers identity development, acculturation, class, prejudice and discrimination, demographics, and verbal and non-verbal communication in the context of different cultures and values. Narrative Development
This course illustrates the means of story-telling and integrates practical writer rules with theoretical models based on literary constructions. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Distance Learning Higher Education

 

This distance learning education program is completed by a traditional correspondence instruction method. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate. The length of each distance learning degree program is calculated based on an average of 15 hours of learning per week.
