This program studies the development or improvement of urban areas by building. Urban development is a system of residential expansion that creates cities. Cities are seen as both the source of and solution to today's economic growth, environmental impact and social challenges. Urban development occurs by expansion into unpopulated areas and/or the renovation of decaying regions.

This course presents the properties that govern the use of soil for plant growth and construction engineering purposes. It emphasizes on sustainable use and conservation. It identifies soil resources for human needs and the management of soil landscape data to ameliorate the environmental impact of human activities.

Urban History & The City
This course analyzes city forms and designs and their relation to culture. It studies the daily visible evidence of the city; self-identification with cities; image and perception; visual design analysis; and place as a representation of culture.

Housing & Community Facilities
This course surveys housing and community development problems and standards. It explores issues of culture, political environment, social context, economic circumstances, and other factors which define and limit housing facilities and delivery. It integrates housing with community facilities such parks, schools, drainage, sewerage, utilities, libraries, solid waste, and transportation.

Urban Policy
This course explores the urban policies of major problems confronting cities and metropolitan regions today. It examines the means and consequences of public intervention in urban land and housing in addition to the issues of transportation and how to manage traffic and urban development, its life cycle, expansion, and decay. It considers the effects of economic globalization, income inequality, and metropolitan decentralization.

Urban Planning
This course examines the principles and theories of urban structure and institutions, the concepts and logic of urban planning, and the evolution of planning ideas in response to changing social, economic, and environmental conditions. It considers public and private responsibilities as well as the major procedures used by urban planners.

Real Estate
This course surveys the processes and people involved in developing real estate; namely the issues of site control, public and private approvals, feasibility analysis, project financing, design and construction, marketing, and asset management. It analyses private and public real-estate investment decisions.

This course reviews the techniques of real estate valuation; market analysis in addition to legal and political analysis. It exposes the approaches to valuation, market comparison, income, and cost. Economic Development
This course deals with the performance and problems of developing countries in relation to growth, employment, structural change, and human development. Urban Design Implementation
This course studies the effective implementation of urban designs and their past heritage. It also considers theories of city building and the elements, patterns, and evolution of the city-shaping urban forms. It presents the methods used in urban morphological analysis to express community values and goals in the design of their cities.

Urban Plan Evaluation
This course explores the methods and techniques for a-priori assessment of physical urban improvement plans, program designs, and public policies. It includes cost effectiveness and goal achievement, as well as more conventional cost-benefit and cost-revenue forms of analysis.

This course of sustainable development explores the many processes and pathways to achieve sustainability today without compromising the ability and resources of future generations to meet their own needs. Once you sign up for the course, Bircham International University will send you (to your mailing address) the suggested textbooks. After reading the book, you will be asked to write a 20 to 35 pages report that reflect your understanding of the book. This report is equivalent to the exam and can be submitted by email or mail. Bircham International University will evaluate your written work. If passed, BIU will issue the corresponding diploma. For a program of 21 credits, the estimated time for completion is 21 weeks. For 45 credits, the estimated time for completion will be 45 weeks, and so on. Calculations are approximate.
